6 Candies We Hope You’ll Eat This Halloween

Written by: Melissa

Hey Modern Guys and Gals,

Halloween is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited. There are so many reasons to love Halloween; the costumes, the awesome makeup, and, most importantly, the candy! But, don’t break into your kids’ goody bags just yet. The portions may be small, but they can have a big effect on our bodies.

Sugar is bad for your skin and it’s in almost everything we eat, even foods that don’t taste sweet. Chances are, your body is already getting more than enough sugar. Add a Halloween candy binge to the mix and you’re asking for a scary skin disaster.

Sugar leads to signs of premature aging. According to Melissa, sugar breaks down elastin, which is the stretchy protein that helps our skin snap back in to shape. Sugar also breaks down collagen, which is one of the main components of our skin. Without these proteins, skin becomes saggy and less resilient.

We checked EatThis, NotThat!, and we’ve compiled a list of some of the (relatively) healthiest Halloween candies. EatThis, NotThat! based their list on several nutrition factors, but here at Modern Aesthetics, we’re all about skin. Our list is specifically focused on sugar, so all of the items on our list contain fewer than 10 grams of sugar.

Pixy Stix

Are you surprised to see Pixy Stix on the list? It’s pure sugar and it contradicts everything we just said, but hear us out. They come in small portions and only contain about 2 grams of sugar per stick. One or two sticks should be more than enough to satisfy your sweet tooth with no harm done.

Jelly Belly Mini Pack

This was the number one candy on the EatThis, NotThat! Halloween list. Each bean is only 4 calories. An entire mini pack of Jelly Bellies contains 0 grams of fat and only 7 grams of sugar. Jelly Bellies come in so many flavors that a mini pack will give you plenty of variety in one snack.

Fun Sized Pretzel M&M’s

Full disclosure: I might be biased because this is my all time favorite candy! They swapped out the chocolate filling for a crunchy pretzel. It tastes better and it’s better for you. With only 60 calories, 2 grams of fat, and 7 grams of sugar, compared to some of the “bad” chocolate candies, this is a sweet choice for your skin.

Peanut Butter Cups

Sorry Reese’s lovers, but Reese’s Peanut Butter cups made the bad list, but Reese’s Pieces made the good list! However, if you really can’t resist a peanut butter cup, try the cups made by Justin’s or Unreal. These companies use healthier ingredients, like dark chocolate, which can actually be good for you. Justin’s peanut butter cups contain only 6 grams of sugar, while Unreal’s have just 5.

Compare that to 3 Reese’s Mini’s, which is packed with over 100 calories and nearly 10 grams of sugar. It’s no wonder they were the number one bad candy!

Smarties

Smarties contain only 25 calories and 0 grams of fat. As far as candies go, this is one of the least harmful options. With only 6 grams of sugar, Smarties also contain one of the lowest sugar counts out of all the Halloween candies.

Kit Kats

No Halloween list would be complete without the Kit Kat. Luckily for us, it’s on our good list. A two-piece snack sized bar contains 7 grams of sugar. Break me off of a piece of that Kit Kat bar!

It’s also important to consider how much candy you’re going to eat. Some candies might be low in sugar, calories, and fat, but you’re more likely to eat several servings. Try as I might, I’ll never eat only one Kit Kat. I’m pretty sure it’s impossible!

On the other hand, suckers, like Blow Pops, might have a higher sugar count for one serving but you’re less likely to eat more than one. No candy is great for you, but if you’re going to give in, give in to something that won’t leave your skin feeling like a monster’s.

Tell us, did your favorite Halloween candy make our list?

Cheers,

Maria Kane
