8 Back To School Tips For Gorgeous Skin

Written by: Melissa

Hello Modern Guys and Gals,

It’s back to school time!! We’re excited, we’re nervous, but most of all, we’re just plain stressed. Getting back into a routine is tough for students and adults alike. With all that you have going on it’s easy to push your skin care to the side.

But, don’t fear! We have a handy-dandy guide for EASY back to school skin maintenance. Yes, you can maintain glowing skin even with the busiest of schedules…and here’s how:

1. Don’t Skip Your Morning Routine

It’s hard to get back to the grind, but hitting the snooze button won’t do your skin any favors. Sleep is important, but don’t trade your skin care for an extra few minutes of rest. At the bare minimum, make time for a quick rinse, a little moisturizer, and some SPF. I promise, you will look much less tired than you might feel!

2. Don’t Skip Your Nightly Routine

Of all the things on this list, this is my biggest struggle. By the end of the day, I’m wiped out and I want to crawl right in bed. Sleeping in your makeup is hard on your skin. It can cause clogged pores and acne. In addition, it gives all the toxins your skin faced throughout the day time to sink into your skin. This leads to a dull and dreary looking tone. Do yourself a favor, no matter how tired you are, make time to wash your face before bed. Your skin will thank you in the morning!

3. Get Enough Rest

After the last two tips, this one might seem impossible. Don’t get into the habit of burning the candle at both ends. Your body needs rest to function properly, and so does your skin. Lack of sleep can cause visible signs of aging and can make your skin appear dull, dry, and lifeless. Establish a bedtime routine to ensure that you’re getting enough sleep for your body’s needs. Adults need 7-9 hours each night, but younger students often need more.

4. Don’t Forget SPF, It’s Still Important Indoors

We’re probably starting to sound like a broken record on this one, but hey, SPF is important! Just because you’re now spending the majority of your day indoors doesn’t mean you can forget your SPF. Your skin is still exposed to the sun during your commute, when you’re near a window, or any time you’re outside during the day. The sun is one of the biggest causes of visible signs of aging, so don’t skip the SPF just because you’re not hitting the beach!

5. Wash Your Hands and Don’t Touch Your Face

Schools are a breeding ground for germs, but frequent hand washing can help prevent the spread of illness. It can also help keep your face clean. Think about all things you touch during the day. Would you really want to put those germs on your face? Further, your fingertips have natural oils that will be transferred to your face. Bacteria and oil is a recipe for clogged pores and acne. So, keep your hands clean, and away from your face.

6. Manage Your Stress Effectively

Stress is terrible for your skin. Stress triggers the production of hormones, such as cortisol, which can lead to acne breakouts. Stress can also cause flare ups of skin conditions, like eczema or psoriasis. Additionally, some people notice extra hair loss during times of stress. If you’re like me, you might bite your nails during stressful times. Take it from me, this is no way to handle stress. You will look and feel much better if you find a more positive outlet. A relaxing facial is a much better outlet than nail biting!

7. Eat a Healthy Diet

We are what we eat…literally. Your body uses the nutrients we take in from food to produce new cells. It’s a lot faster and easier to grab fast food or prepackaged meals, but they’re not very nutritious. In addition, many of us turn to sugary drinks or snacks for quick bursts of energy, but the high sugar content can contribute to visible signs of aging. A healthy snack will not only give you more energy, but will be better for your skin. Grab an apple, instead of an energy bar, and don’t forget the water!

8. Don’t Share Makeup

This might seem obvious, but makeup gets passed around at school so it’s a good time for a reminder on this. Sharing makeup is bad, mmmkay. Makeup containers can be a hotbed for bacteria, especially if they’re not getting properly closed. Brushes can also harbor bacteria, and you never know how well your friend is cleaning her tools. It’s gross enough to think about your own skin’s oils touching your face, why would you want someone else’s oils on your skin? Sharing lip gloss can lead to cold sores. Sharing eyeliner can lead to pink eye. So, before you hand a product to your best friend, think about what else you might be sharing.

We know that back to school can be a stressful time for parents too. Whether you’re a student or a parent, it’s important to make some time for yourself. Go for a walk, get a massage, or come see us at Modern Aesthetics for a relaxing facial!
