Laser Tattoo Removal Before & Aftercare: Your Complete Guide
Tattoo removal results are not just about what happens during your session. A huge part of how quickly your tattoo fades and how comfortably your skin heals comes down to what you do before and after each treatment.
The Astanza Duality laser does its part, and your body does the rest. The better you set yourself up on both ends of each session, the better your results will be. This guide walks you through exactly what to do from the weeks leading up to your appointment through the full healing process after.
Before Your Laser Tattoo Removal Session
Preparation matters more than most people realize. Following these guidelines helps protect your skin, reduces the risk of complications, and gives the laser the best possible canvas to work with.
Protect Your Skin from the Sun (4 Weeks Prior)
This is the big one. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and spray tans for at least four weeks before your appointment. Treating tanned or sunburned skin increases the risk of adverse reactions and can affect how well the laser targets the ink. We want all of that laser energy going directly to the tattoo, not competing with melanin from a fresh tan.
Use a physical sunscreen containing Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide on the treatment area consistently in the weeks before your session, rain or shine. This is not just a summer recommendation — UV exposure happens year-round, even on cloudy days in Wisconsin.
Skip Caffeine and Alcohol (24 Hours Before)
In the 24 hours leading up to your treatment, avoid caffeine and alcohol. Both can affect circulation and your body's response during the session. Showing up well-hydrated and free of these substances helps your treatment go smoothly.
Come In with Clean, Product-Free Skin
The treatment area should be clean and free of lotions, makeup, or other products on the day of your appointment. If your tattoo is in an area where you typically apply skincare or body lotion, simply skip it that morning.
Your Treatment Schedule
At your initial consultation, your provider will determine the right timeframe for scheduling your sessions. Most clients come in every 6 to 10 weeks. That spacing is intentional — your immune system needs time between sessions to flush the shattered ink particles from the previous treatment. Keeping to your schedule consistently helps your body do its job efficiently.
After Your Laser Tattoo Removal Session
Aftercare is where your healing happens. Following these instructions closely protects your skin, reduces discomfort, and supports the fading process between sessions.
The First 24 Hours: The RICE Method
For the first 24 hours after your session, follow the RICE method to ensure optimal healing:
REST: Avoid strenuous activities that cause you to sweat.
ICE: Apply a cold pack once every hour for the first day, then as needed for comfort.
COMPRESSION: Apply light pressure while icing the area.
ELEVATION: Keep the treated area at or above heart level.
Hydrate to Help Your Body Flush the Ink
Drink plenty of water in the days and weeks following your treatment. Staying well-hydrated assists your immune system in flushing out the shattered ink particles. This is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do to support your results.
Keep the Area Moisturized
Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor daily for at least a week. Keeping the skin moisturized supports healing and helps prevent excessive dryness or cracking.
Sun Safety is Essential
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds while your skin is healing. When you are outside, use a physical sunscreen containing Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide and reapply every two hours. Sun exposure on healing skin can cause complications and slow your overall progress.
What About Blisters and Bruising?
Blistering and bruising can occur after treatment. These are completely normal reactions and usually resolve within a few days. If the skin is broken or blisters develop, apply aquaphor to protect the area. The most important thing is to leave it alone — do not scratch or pick at the skin.
Additional Care Guidelines
Beyond the RICE method and core aftercare, keep these guidelines in mind:
Cleansing: Use lukewarm water and mild soap to gently cleanse the treated area. Pat dry — do not rub.
Avoid pools and hot tubs: Stay away from swimming pools, hot tubs, and spas while the area is healing to prevent infection.
Skip makeup: Delay applying makeup to the treated area for 48 hours after treatment.
No shaving: Avoid shaving the treated area while it is healing.
Pain management: If needed, take extra-strength Tylenol for discomfort. Avoid ibuprofen or aspirin as they can affect healing. Take Benadryl if you experience itching.
What to Expect During Healing
As your skin heals between sessions, you may notice redness, swelling, tenderness, scabbing, or temporary changes in skin tone around the treated area. These are all normal parts of the healing process.
