What to Expect from Laser Tattoo Removal

Tattoo removal is one of those things people research for months before they ever book a consultation, and we love that. The more you understand about the process, the more confident you feel walking through our doors.

Below we describe exactly what happens during laser tattoo removal at Harmony Wellness — from the science behind how the laser works to what your skin looks like afterward.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Actually Works

Tattoo ink sits in the deep layers of your skin, which is exactly why tattoos are permanent in the first place. Your immune system tries to remove foreign particles, but tattoo ink particles are too large to flush out on their own. That is where laser technology comes in.

During a laser tattoo removal session, specialized laser light is applied directly to the tattooed area. The ink particles absorb that light energy, heat up rapidly, and shatter into fragments small enough for your immune system to carry away. Over the days and weeks following each treatment, your body flushes those fragments out and the tattoo visibly fades. With each additional session, the laser reaches a deeper layer of ink until the tattoo has cleared to your satisfaction.

One important thing to know: the laser selectively targets the tattoo ink, leaving the surrounding skin tissue unharmed. That precision is a big part of why modern laser tattoo removal is so effective.

The Technology We Use: Astanza Duality Laser

At Harmony Wellness, we use the Astanza Duality laser for tattoo removal. This is a medical-grade Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and it is one of the most effective tools available for breaking up tattoo ink across a wide range of colors.

The Astanza Duality operates on two wavelengths:

  • 1064 nm wavelength: Targets black and dark ink, which absorbs this wavelength most effectively. Most tattoos contain black ink, making this the workhorse of your removal sessions.

  • 532 nm wavelength: Targets red and warm-toned inks, which respond to this shorter wavelength.

You can actually tell the laser is working during your session. You will hear a snapping sound, feel the pulse of the treatment, and see the ink change color in real time. It is one of those things that is oddly satisfying once you know what to look for.

What About Colored Ink?

Ink color plays a major role in how your removal responds. Here is a straightforward breakdown:

  • Black and dark ink: Responds fastest and most completely to laser treatment.

  • Red ink: Responds well to the 532 nm wavelength of the Astanza Duality.

  • Blue and green ink: These are the most challenging colors to remove. We can often achieve significant lightening, but we want to be upfront with you — complete removal of blue and green ink cannot be guaranteed. Your provider will give you an honest assessment during your consultation.

We would rather give you accurate expectations from day one than overpromise and underdeliver.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Plan for at least 3 treatments as your starting point. Because every tattoo is unique, the removal timeline varies for every client — some fade quickly while others need more sessions. Several factors influence your individual timeline:

  • Skin tone and ink saturation: These play a major role in your results. Darker skin tones and denser ink require more careful treatment planning.

  • Age of the tattoo: Older tattoos often respond faster because the ink has already begun to break down naturally.

  • Ink depth and density: Professional tattoos are applied with precision and depth, which can require more sessions than amateur tattoos.

  • Ink colors present: As covered above, color variety affects treatment complexity.

  • Your overall health: Younger, healthier clients tend to see faster results because their immune systems flush ink more efficiently. Cell turnover plays a real role here.

  • Location on the body: Areas closer to your heart respond faster. Finger, hand, foot, and ankle tattoos typically require more time between sessions because circulation is slower further from the heart.

  • Pre-existing scarring: Scar tissue can affect how the laser interacts with the skin.

Sessions are typically scheduled 6 to 10 weeks apart. That spacing is not just a scheduling preference — it is necessary. Your body needs time to flush the shattered ink particles and heal between treatments. Rushing the process can compromise both your results and your skin health.

Does Laser Tattoo Removal Hurt?

The first session is typically the most intense, and many clients describe the sensation as similar to the snap of a rubber band or the feeling of getting a tattoo. The good news is that subsequent sessions often feel more manageable as you know what to expect and your tolerance adjusts.

Most clients compare it to laser hair removal in terms of discomfort. Numbing solutions are available to help make your session more comfortable. Just let us know when you book and we will make sure you are set up for the best possible experience.

What Your Skin Does Immediately After Treatment

What happens right after a session is something we want you to be fully prepared for, because it can look a little alarming if you are not expecting it.

Immediately after treatment, you will notice whitening of the treated area. This typically fades within a few minutes and is a normal part of the laser interaction. In the hours and days that follow, you may experience:

  • Redness, swelling, and tenderness

  • Bruising in some cases

  • Blisters, crust, or scabs forming within 12 to 72 hours, which may take two weeks or more to fully heal

  • Pinkness or paleness in the treated area after scabs separate

  • Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin around the treatment area, particularly for clients with darker skin tones

All of this is a sign that your immune system is doing exactly what it should. The laser creates a controlled superficial wound, and your body responds by healing and carrying ink away. It looks more dramatic than it is, and your provider will walk you through what is normal at every stage.

What Progress Actually Looks Like

It helps to know what to expect at different points in your removal journey so you are not second-guessing yourself along the way.

Early Sessions (1–3)

You will see lightening, especially in areas with dense black ink. Do not expect dramatic fading yet. The laser is working on the top layers of ink, and the real changes happen beneath the surface as your body processes the fragments over the following weeks.

Middle Sessions (4–8)

This is typically where clients start to feel genuinely excited about their progress. Some areas may clear almost completely, especially simpler sections with black ink. Other parts may still need more work, which is completely normal given how layered tattoo application is.

Later Sessions (9+)

Progress may feel slower in later sessions as you are working on stubborn spots and deeper ink layers. This is when open communication with your provider matters most. You get to decide what level of fading feels right for you, and we will support you in that decision every step of the way.
